Road to Protea Colours

Angling members of SADSAA wishing to obtain their Protea Deep Sea Angling Colours need to follow the following selection criteria as laid down by the SADSAA Executive Council in January 2002.

Anglers firstly need to obtain their SADSAA National Colours before being allowed to nominate for Protea Colours.

DEEP SEA ANGLING FACETS BEING:

  • BOTTOMFISH
  • TUNA
  • GAMEFISH
  • LIGHT TACKLE BILLFISH
  • HEAVY TACKLE BILLFISH

NOMINATING FOR SADSAA COLOURS

Anglers nominating for SADSAA National Colours must have competed in a minimum of two (2) Inter-provincials of any facet of angling  and the angler must have competed in three (3) National Tournaments,  with two (2) of the Nationals being in the same facet of angling for which the Angler wishes to nominate i.e.  Light Tackle Bill, Heavy Tackle Bill, Bottomfish, Tuna or Gamefish.

2 x INTERPROVINCIALS  – ANY FACET plus 3 x NATIONALS – TWO IN THE SAME FACET FOR WHICH THE ANGLER WISHES TO NOMINATE FOR SADSAA COLOURS

e.g.   An angler wanting to nominate for SADSAA Tuna Nationals

  • The angler must have competed in 2 Inter-provincials (Any Facet)
  • The angler must have competed in 3 Nationals, two of the Nationals being the Tuna Nationals and the other National being any other facet such as Light Tackle Bill, Heavy Tackle Bill, Bottomfish, Tuna or Gamefish.

 NOMINATING FOR PROTEA COLOURS

Anglers nominating for Protea Colours must have at least one (1) SADSAA cap in the facet that the angler is nominating for Protea Colours in.

For example, if the angler wishes to nominate for:

  1. Protea ILTTA Sailfish Internationals, the angler must have SADSAA Colours for Light Tackle Billfish
  2. Hawaii Bill-fish International Billfish Tournament, the Angler must have SADSAA Colours for Heavy Tackle Billfish

There are numerous competitions that anglers can nominate for such as:

PROCEDURE FOR ANGLERS WISING TO NOMINATE

  • Anglers nominating for SADSAA and PROTEA Colours must complete the current SADSAA/PROTEA Nomination form.
  • A copy of the current Nomination form is available on the website and from the SADSAA Secretary as well as from all Provincial Chairs & Secretaries
  • The form is to be given to the Provincial Chair or Secretary for completion (as per the Province’s requirements), and for them to then forward to the National Selector Convenor via the Johannesburg admin office by the due date called for.
  • The completed nomination form must be accompanied by a PROVINCIAL proof of payment of R100 nomination fee. NO CASH will be accepted.

After Selections have taken place, the National Convenor will inform the SADSAA President, who will contact the various anglers confirming their selections.

ONLY THE SADSAA PRESIDENT NOTIFIES ANGLERS OF EITHER SADSAA SELECTIONS OR PROTEA SELECTIONS!

The following are extracts from the SADSAA Resolution Register

Resolution 10 of COLOURS/AWARDS MATTERS passed January 2002 and amended August 2010 states:

Facets:  Bottom, Light Tackle, Heavy Tackle, Game and Tuna fishing

Nominating for SADSAA colours:

Anglers must have competed in a minimum of two (2) Inter-provincials of any facet of angling

Anglers must have competed in three (3) National Tournaments, two (2) of the Nationals being in the same facet of angling you would like to nominate for Protea colours i.e. Sail/Marlin/Bottom/Tuna/Game fishing.

Nominating for Protea Colours:

At least one (1) SADSAA cap in the facet that the angler is nominating for Protea Colours in.

Nomination Procedure:

  • SADSAA/PROTEA Nomination form. You can download the form HERE or request it from the SADSAA Secretary/Provincial Secretary.
  • The form to be accompanied by proof of payment to SADSAA of R100-00. No cash will be accepted.
  • Submit the form to the Provincial Chairmen/Secretary/Tournaments Officer. The Provincial Representative will forward the nomination to the National Selector Convenor by the due date called for.
  • After Selections have taken place, the National Convenor will inform the SADSAA President who will contact the various anglers on their selections. It was also agreed that the President will notify the appropriate Provincial Chairmen.

Angling Road to Protea Colours

  • An angler must join a club affiliated to SADSAA
  • Angler must compete in 3 Interclub competitions for his/her club
  • Angler must nominate for Association Provincial colours (Half colours) to the Provincial Body
  • Angler must nominate for full Provincial Colours
  • Angler must nominate for National Colours for their provincial body
  • Angler must be selected for three nationals for their provincial body of which two nationals being in the facet that the angler wants to nominate for SADSAA colours.

ONLY ONCE SADSAA COLOURS HAVE BEEN OBTAINED IS THE ANGLER NOW ELIGIBLE TO NOMINATE FOR PROTEA COLOURS

PROTEA COLOURS OR MASTER PROTEA COLOURS

Resolution 32 of SELECTION MATTERS passed 10 Feb 2017 & amended 13 October 2017 states:

If an angler who has already obtained his colours for either Protea or SADSAA wish to nominate for a Protea or SADSAA team he must qualify as a CURRENT angler. To be considered as CURRENT, the angler must have fished for Protea, SADSAA or his Provincial Team in an Interprovincial or National Championship within 24 months of the date that nominations close. Selectors and Skippers in National and Interprovincial Championships will also remain current if doing duty in one of these areas prevents them from participating as an angler within this 24-month period.

Resolution 40 of SELECTION MATTER passed 08 April 2022 states:

  • To qualify for a SADSAA U/21 side the angler must have fished 1 x Inter Provincial as a U/21 Provincial team member in the facet that they are nominating for, and at least 2 x Nationals for their Province as an U/21 angler, one of which has to be in the facet that they are nominating for as a Provincial U/21 team member.
  • All U/19 anglers that have fished for their respective provinces (Provincial Junior Colours) in any SADSAA sanctioned tournament will be credited with 1 x U/21 Inter Provincial cap (This is irrespective of the number of U/19 caps that they have already fished). This will include being selected for a Barbarian team.
  • All U/19 anglers that have fished in any National Tournament as a member of a U/19 SADSAA team will be credited with 1 x U/21 National cap. (This is irrespective of the number of U/19 SADSAA caps you have).
  • If a U/21 angler has represented their province in a Senior SADSAA Nationals as a Senior Provincial Angler, they will be credited with 1 x U/21 Nationals to count towards qualifying for a SADSAA U/21 team
